Your Daily Word Prompt(6/15/20)—Pittance by Sheryl
Pittance
I have been working for my new company two years now. I was supposed to get a raise at the end of my first year. Unfortunately, due to cut backs I was just happy to still have my job as they were hard to come by lately.
I was hoping against hope that I would be getting a raise this year. If that wwas going to happen we were supposed to hear in the next week or two. I was crossing my fingers. Getting a raise every now and then makes the work your do a little more tolerable. It also gives you something to look forward to.
Two weeks later I was called into my bosse’s office and given my yearly review. He then proceeded to tell me that I would be getting a raise. My heartbeat increased as I tried to contain my excitement. A minute later I was told my raise would be 10¢ an hour.
I’m not positive, but my mouth may have fell open. Just incase it had, I made a conscious effort to close it. I thanked my boss for the good review and the wage increase. I signed the paperwork and shook my bosses hand.
I was in a daze as I stood up and walked out of his office. In my mind I was thinking 10¢ F*ck*ng cents and hour. That pittance isn’t even worth the cost of the paper I just signed. So much for having something to look forward to. That pittance of a raise is almost an insult.
Back at my desk I was working on cruise control. I worked in a daze for the rest of the day.
