Question

“Where do we go to when we are asleep?”

For me personally I do not go anywhere. I have not been able to reach the R.E.M.(deepest) sleep stage for several decades now.

This is such a difficult question as I sit here and think about it. I see all the photo examples you have included in your thought provoking post and I can picture each one of these examples, expecially the one with the baby.

Things becomes more difficult when I try to put these thoughts into words. I think as a person becomes older and has more experiences this becomes even harder.

So, I am left to surmise. I’m no sleep expert, nor do I purport to be one. Despite all my past and constant dealing with the issue of sleep.

As I understand it, R.E.M. sleep is supposed to be the point where our brain “shuts down” so to speak so it can rest and repair. To me this means that our unconscious takes over.

Of course there is the occasional(hopefully) nightmare. At first, I was thinking nightmares might be just our unconscious mind slipping up giving us something scary instead of something enjoyable to watch on sleep TV.

After some further consideration I decided despite the nightmare being scary it might be actually “teaching” us something. Then, when a particular situation occurs while we are awake the unremembered nightmare might allow us to make better decisions without us actually “knowing” why.

Later after things calm down we might actually wonder why we had handled the situation in the manner that we had. Taking into account that I feel the unconscious is controlling our dream / nightmare roller coaster we would not know why.

Basically I s’pose when we hit deep sleep where we go depends on our awake experiences. As we live our lives we have good and bad experiences. I think this would explain why we sometimes have nightmares.

We rarely can remember where we were” while asleep when we wake. Sometimes we can remember little bits and pieces. Generally we remember a positive or negative “feeling”.

As I don’t experience deep sleep anymore I am trying to write this remembering the Distant past.

Hopefully this did not turn into a big circle writing.

I ❤️ love to hear your thoughts so Please feel free leave a comment, opinion, or feedback.

Is so very true as an insight.
