Blogging Insights #52 Touchy Topics by Salted Caramel & Sparksfromacombustiblemind
Questions
MELANIE’S QUESTIONS :
A) Warning “labels” when one is writing about something that could potentially be ‘touchy’ to some folks. Pros and cons and that segues rather nicely into the second topic
Yes, I think warning labels are a good way to go. I have seen a few articles with warnings at the beginning of the post.
B) Censorship. Is it censorship if one blogs ‘sensitively’ (aka soft pedals hard issues)? Should writers have to think of every possible reader their writing might touch, every single scenario where a reader might take offense and so on? I’m not thinking of blatant offensiveness (and what’s offensive to one person isn’t necessarily to the next one in line), but a general trying to cover all bases all the time type of thing.
I don’t know how a blogger or any writer for that matter could take into account every individual readers.
I think you should just consider the sensitivity of your overall post comparing it to national norms. Place warning labels as needed based on these norms..
Taking this into account I think the reader has to take some responsibility regarding what they are reading. If they start reading it and decide it is not to their taste they should simply move along.
As far as censorship goes, are we not a land of free speech whether it be spoken or written? I think the individual has to have some responsibility in this regard just as stated above.
If someone or some company can block a point of view just because they don’t agree with the subject matter. Then how are we a democracy, if we cannot hear every point of view so we can make out own choices.
MY QUESTIONS:
Do you post about touchy or sensitive topics on your blog? If so, what kind of subjects do you like to discuss?
To be honest I’m not certain if I have posted any sensitive subjects.
I find it engaging and thought provoking to discuss anything. As long as the people involved in the discussion are able to be civil and accept other’s in the discussion may have a different point of view. And most importantly that if they do have a different point of view that it is Okay.
Do you respond to sensitive or controversial subjects in the form of prompts?
yes, I do I have no problem discussing anything. So, this probably means I do have a sensitive post, but I obviously didn’t think they needed a label as I know I have not posted a warning .
Do you take part in controversial discussions as part of a comments thread?
I have left comments on controversial subjects. I would try my best to not remark in a way that would provoke hostility.
How do you think sensitive subjects should be handled on the blogosphere?
On this question I would just have to divert to my above answers. Which I suppose technically means i am lazy and don’t want to re-type my thought….lol My Bad.😬
I ❤️ love to hear your thoughts so please feel free to leave a comment , opinion, or feedback.
