Fandango’s Provocative Question #100

Fandango’s Provocative Question #100 by Five Dot Oh

Question

How do we make peace with ourselves, knowing that, being the basically good people we are, we also have a side to us which we know isn’t the best — our “dark side”? Can we overcome these parts of our lives that we may not be proud of? Or do we simply accept them, learn to live with them, and move on?

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is that some people’s “bad side” is terrifying compared to other people’s “bad sides” For instance murder, torture, rape, etc.

Some “bad sides” are minimal i.e. being rude and picking on someone. I am in no way minimizing these actions as they can be extremely traumatizing.

Basically, I guess there are degrees of “bad sides”. I would say in order for someone to made “peace” with their “bad side” is somewhat dependent on making peace with the person to which their wrong doing was aimed towards.

Other times it makes no difference if a person makes peace with themselves or not. There are times when people need to be punished by our laws and even spend time in jail if necessary.

I would also think that a person’s ability to make “peace” with themselves depends on their conscience. I’m sure this is also tied in with how bad a person’s “bad side” is. Both of these determine the times it is necessary for a persons actions require them to be punished by laws.

There are times when we just have to learn to deal with something and move on. I think these times mostly involve something that happens with a person’s inner self.
