Does The Ability To Think Depend On Consciousness?

My immediate answer is no.

Then, I had a thought of someone laying in a hospital bed in coma. I will start by saying I am in no way in any kind of medical field.

I do have met one criteria that I as to the situation I listed above. I was in coma for 2 1/2 weeks when I was 2 years old. This was a result being in an automobile accident with my Father. I ended up having a traumatic brain injury.

Now whether I was in coma or not I would never be able to remember what I knew being that young. So, the information I am going to list is based on what I have been told by my parents.

I was told that I had to relearn everything over again. This of course included walking, eating, drinking, an so many other things I can’t remember to list.

We also know that some, probably not all, but some coma patients end up having to relearn many life lessons.

That all being said, my answer is now no, under certain circumstances.

I believe thinking is not based on consciousness because;

  • Artists will wake from sleeping to draw something so they don’t forget
  • Musicians will wake from sleeping or stop in the middle of doing something to write down a song or start playing their instrument and jotting down notes while they have the tune in their head
  • I would have to say the same applies to lawyers working on a big case
  • Poets and more….
