The Power Of Mother Nature

It was the longest 60 seconds of their lives. The doors of the latched storm shelter were banging as if it would be ripped from its hinges at any second. We were all huddled in the farthest corner of the the shelter praying the doors would hold.

Just as they were thinking this horror would never end there was a loud silence. The kind of silence that makes you wonder if you’ve lost your hearing.

Gradually the family relaxed as they realized the doors had held. They were now simply resting on their frame.

Although they felt somewhat relaxed a whole different kind of gloom filled the shelter. Now was the time when they had to open the doors and see what was lost and if anyone was hurt.

Slowly one at a time they emerged form the storm shelter. They stood just outside the doors as if they may have to dive back in at any moment.

In stunned silence they slowly took in the destruction Mother Nature had left. A mere 60 seconds and years of work was undone.

They could hear or see none of their neighbors. They hoped that they either had not come out of their shelters or had been somewhere else when this nightmare tore through their neighborhood.

The children started to cry. Their Mother wrapped them in a comforting hug as she looked in horror at what had once been their home.

The was a pile of rubbish piled high where their house once stood. All that was left was a single picnic table where they had had many a summer meal.

Trying to be reassuring the Mother told her children everything would be alright that they would rebuild their house and everything would be fine.

As she was speaking these words tears came to her eyes thinking of all the keep sakes she had been saving that were now destroyed. A single tear ran down her cheek.

She suddenly she felt a pair of strong arms wrap her and the children in a loving hug.
